Question 1- Reflecting on the story, what
did you feel about Evan having the last laugh?
Answer- Evan having the last laugh is the
most enjoyable part of the story. The author does not tell us what the crime
was for which Evans is in the prison . so the readers have no reason to have
any particular ill will against him . For them, it is a between the prison
Evans and the prison authorities. In this battle Evans actually wins.
Question 2- When Stephen comes back to the
tell cell he jump to a conclusion and the whole machinery blindly goes by
assumption without any checking the identity of the injured ‘McLeery ‘ Does
this show how hasty conjunction can prevent one from seeing the obvious? How is
the criminal able to predict such negligence?
Answer- There is no doubt that Evans escape
from the prison is the result of Stephens reaching a hasty conjecture. It is indeed true that hasty
conjecture can prevent us from seeing the obvious. Evans predict that such
negligence will keep on happing because after all it is a battle of wits . Both
the criminal and police try their own plans . the clever one succeed.
Question 3- What could the governor have
done the securely bring back Evans to prison when he caught him at the golden

good – for – a giggle , gullible governor , that was all?
Answer- The Governor could have checked the
prison officer and the van before handing Evans so that officer . he didn’t do
so not because he was just another good – for
another good – for – a giggle , gullible Governor but because once again he failed to judge how
clever Evans could be . He had told Evans that there was police man all around
the hotel , which was false. On the other hand there were friends of all around
who kept a tight vigil on every happening around . they not only successfully
spotted the trouble but took a timely action to nip that trouble in the bud .
governor was certainly feeling very smug after recapturing Evans and so he
would not think that Evans could escape yet again and so quickly .
Question 4- While we condemn the crime, we
are sympathetic to the criminal . Is this reason why prison staff often develop
a soft corner for those in custody?
Answer- it is indeed human nature that we
condemn the crime , we do not always hate the criminal . with the passage of
time, we forget the crime but the criminal remains before our eyes. Slowly but
certainly , we begin to sympathise with him . more often begin to feel pity for
his suffering . we want to be sure that he is not being made to suffer more
than he should . that was the reason why the governor asked Stephens to come
out of Evans cell he was pretending to appear foe an examination . in fact it
was not just the governor but whole prison staff which at times showed softness
towards Evans . for example , Evans wore his cap which he had earlier asked to
be taken off . not only that , Jackson wishes him good lick for the examination
.
Question 5- Do you agree that between crime
and punishment it it mainly a battle of wits?
Answer- That between crime and punishment it is mainly a battle of wits , is indeed theme of the story . it all begins with Evans when he wanted to t5ake O level Examination in German .
